Identify the energy you want to move
A home battery stores energy for later use. With solar, the usual question is how much daytime surplus could supply evening demand. Start with generation, export and consumption data where available, rather than choosing a battery from the size of the house.
If the property is occupied during daylight, it may already use much of the generation directly. If demand is mainly in the evening, storage may increase self-consumption. Neither pattern establishes a guaranteed return; the proposed system needs a calculation.
Read capacity and power together
Usable capacity in kWh describes energy stored. Charge and discharge ratings in kW describe the rate at which energy can move. Ask whether the battery can support the intended loads and what happens when demand exceeds its output.
Check usable rather than only nominal capacity, warranty conditions, expected cycling and performance losses. Battery storage does not create electricity and does not move summer generation into winter.
Compare a retrofit with a combined system
Existing solar panels may be compatible with additional storage, but the inverter, metering and electrical installation determine the options. Ask what an AC-coupled retrofit would involve and whether an inverter change is being proposed.
Confirm the proposed battery location, access for maintenance and the installer’s safety assessment. Backup during a power cut is a separate capability requiring suitable design; do not assume every battery provides it.
Treat tariff savings as a separate scenario
Some systems can charge from the grid during lower-price periods. Ask how tariff timings, losses, export rules and warranty conditions affect the forecast. Compare solar-only, solar-plus-battery and any grid-charging scenario using consistent assumptions.
