Measure what can actually fit
A terraced roof may have a chimney, dormer, rooflight and rear extension within a relatively compact footprint. Ask for a measured panel layout that shows obstacles, required clearances and the available roof slopes. An aerial estimate is a useful first discussion, not a substitute for a survey.
The panel count and rated kWp are not the annual generation forecast. Ask how orientation and seasonal shading change expected kWh, and compare that output with the electricity your household can use during daylight.
Find a workable access route
A mid-terrace property may need a different scaffolding arrangement from an end terrace. Establish whether the installer needs a neighbour’s agreement, rear access or space on a pavement. The quotation should identify who arranges permissions and any additional access costs.
Plan the cable route from the panels to the inverter and electricity supply. Ask where equipment can be safely installed and maintained without obstructing access. Battery location is a design question, not something to leave until installation day.
Check the roof before installing long-lived equipment
Have the roof covering and fixing method assessed. If repairs are likely soon, compare doing them first with the future cost of removing and refitting panels. Clarify who is responsible for weatherproofing and how roof and equipment warranties interact.
A terraced house is not automatically unsuitable for solar, and it is not automatically exempt from planning checks. Confirm listing, conservation controls and the proposed work for the address with the relevant council.
Keep the proposal proportionate
With less roof space, compare the full installed cost and forecast useful energy carefully. A modest array may be a sensible option; a large battery cannot compensate for insufficient generation. Ask for a solar-only baseline and an explanation of any optimisers or microinverters.
